How did the brand get its start?
The brand actually started as a hobby. I was making YouTube videos showing my audience how I take care of both me and my daughters natural hair using my homemade hair products. There was a demand for my products from my viewers. I began selling my products on the website Etsy. Shortly after, I realized that it was a booming business. So, then I rebranded the products and started Tailored Beauty. I am really passionate about creating hair products that contain healthy ingredients that could be used for all hair types and all ages.
What was the first product that you created?
The first product that I created was Everything Butter. I created that product several years ago when I started my hair journey. I needed a product that would help retain moisture for my type 4 hair. I started using it on my stomach when I was pregnant, then when I had my my daughter I used it on her hair as well. I noticed that this product was great for our hair and skin. I was especially surprised that I did not have stretch marks after my pregnancy. I named the product Everything Butter because it can be on everything! Our customers love using it on their hair and it’s shown to improve skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema.
What inspired the Lustrous Hair Remedy Serum?
I was inspired to create the Lustrous Hair Remedy Serum because I wanted to create a serum based on the Ayuvedic hair care regimen. I wanted to create regimen containing medicinal herbs. I love doing hairstyle such as flexi rods, twist out, and even straightening my natural hair. Sometimes heavy oils can weigh your hair down, so I wanted to create a light weight oil that would strengthen the hair and provide shine to a finished style.

What advice would you give to other women who want to start their own company?
The best advice I would give to other women who want to start their own company is to think of entrepreneurship as an ongoing college course that you want to ace. That involves educating yourself, attending a lot of educational events. Learning is key, this can even include learning via YouTube or listening to podcasts. The more education you have behind running a business such as financials, marketing, product innovation, and understanding your consumers, the stronger you will be as a business person.
What’s next for Tailored Beauty?
The brand is growing at a rapid pace and the pandemic has not stopped our growth. We just moved into a bigger facility to accommodate our growing brand. In 2021, we plan to acquire more retail locations so that our products can be easily accessible to our customers as well as produce more innovative products in the natural hair space.
