How did Shea Radiance get its start?
We were looking for a natural solution for our family’s dry skin and eczema flare-ups.
What were you doing before you started Shea Radiance?
I worked in software development for a healthcare company in Washington DC.
When did you know that you could leave your day job and turn the products that you were making in your kitchen into a full-blown business?
I wanted Shea Radiance to be a beauty brand and not just a side hustle or hobby. We put in a lot of time on weekends and weekday evenings selling in local markets and manufacturing products in our kitchen. We saw that there was a demand for the product and growth potential, but we couldn’t realize the potential with me working a full-time job with a long commute.
We were not profitable and the business was not fully able to support me when we agreed that I should resign from my full-time job. It was a risk, and even though we faced a lot of financial challenges because of the decision, I can look back and say that it was the right decision.
What are the benefits of African Black Soap?
Black soap is a dark-colored cleansing bar. It is soft and porous and dissolves faster than most cold press soaps. Black soap produces a very rich lather and gives the skin a clean, soft feel. Where is your African Black Soap sourced from?
Our black soap noodles that are used as the base for the body wash is sourced from Ghana. We partner with a premium soap-making factory in Accra run by an amazing businesswoman who provides employment opportunities to young adults.

The key ingredients are the black soap base blended with colloidal oats and essential oils to gently cleanse and lock in moisture.
What are the benefits of these key ingredients?
A rich foaming, gentle cleansing body wash infused with the benefits of oats. The black soap cleanses and the oats attract and lock in moisture to the skin.
Is the Lavender & Rosemary Body Wash for all skin types?
Absolutely, the lavender essential oil has aromatherapy benefits to make your shower time relaxing and rejuvenating.
Can the African Black Soap Lavender & Rosemary Body Wash be used daily?
Absolutely, it’s gentle enough for daily use.
What other fragrances does your body wash come in?
We use only pure essential oils to scent our products. In addition to Lavender & Rosemary blend; we have Citrus & Spearmint and Unscented.
What other products from Shea Radiance can you suggest using after the body wash?
I strongly recommend the use of our body moisturizers which include the Whipped Body Butter and Nourishing Body Cream, both come in Lavender and Citrus essential oils.
What advice would you give to other women who wish to start their own business?
Don’t be afraid to start small. Take your idea and create a sample or minimum viable product (MVP); test your idea by selling it to customers; get feedback, make improvements and repeat the process of selling. It is so important that you get your products in front of your potential customers.
What’s next for Shea Radiance?
We are looking forward to releasing the new look for our natural hair care line this Fall.
