Protecting Your Tresses Both During and Post Workout

By Angelique Miles

I think I’ve seen it all at the gym—head wraps, all kinds of headscarves, hair ties, do rags, and the one thing I will never understand wearing anywhere in public, hair bonnets. Yes, the ones meant to sleep in. I always marvel at women who have the courage to do that. I understand going to great lengths to ensure your hair is on point when you leave the gym, but there has to be a better way! If you get your workout in before having to go to work, or like to grab a post gym meal (or cocktail ☺) with your gym buddies, it may be a good idea to use styling products not only to protect your hair from damage and to keep it as intact as possible, but also to make it easy to style upon finishing your workout.

I usually train early in the mornings and, since I work from home, couldn’t care less how my hair looks during or post workout. I try to keep a hat handy if my hair is particularly out of pocket that day, but for the most part, I just wing it, particularly during the fall and winter months. But when the weather is warm and working out is more of a social thing to do, I make a conscious decision to try products to help protect my style during and after my sweat sessions so I look presentable enough to not have to go straight home after I leave the gym.

Since I wear my hair really short, I have a particular way of styling it, along with particular products that work best for my style and texture. I sweat a lot when I exercise, so my hair gets wet every day. As a result, I condition wash (co-wash) it a lot. After I towel dry it a little, I use some kind of oil, a leave-in conditioner, style with mousse, then let it air dry.

Lately I have been using Lottabody LOVE ME 5-n-1 Miracle Styling Crème with Coconut and Shea Oils from their new product line several times a day---after a sweaty session to add sheen and hold a little curl, again as a leave-in when I wash it, then as needed throughout the day when the sun has dried out my tresses.

To my delight, the Styling Crème keeps my hair frizz free and in place for the most part during my entire workout--a miracle! Before using it, I would usually leave the gym with a little Afro depending on how long it’s been since I’ve had a haircut (not that there’s anything wrong with that, it’s just not how I wear my hair). After my workout, I spritz a little more styling crème to smooth out any frizziness.

To smooth and shape my edges, I use Lottabody’s CONTROL ME Edge Gel, another product from their new line. I have a ton of edge products in my beauty arsenal: gels, pastes, molds-you name it. The Lottabody Edge Gel is my new favorite. It only has a faint, light scent, it’s not too heavy or tacky, and it doesn’t flake.

Whatever style, texture, or length your hair, the new product line from Lottabody has something for you to protect and preserve your ‘do from the most intense sweaty session. Check out their other products in the COCOTIQUE Shop!
