Jeanette Jenkins - The Hollywood Trainer

We are so honored that Jeanette Jenkins has agreed to be our very first COCOBelle of the Month. Among her many celebrity clients Jeanette has helped P!nk, Alicia Keys & Nia Long work off the post pregnancy baby weight and has collaborated with client & X-Factor Judge Kelly Rowland for a second DVD “Sexy Abs Cardio Sculpt” to be released in October 2013.

The Nike Training Club Ambassador took some time to chat with us about her series of kick-butt fitness DVDs (one of which, you’ve received in your August COCOTIQUE Box!), how she uses strategic planning to keep her master plan moving forward—and, of course, shares her Ultimate Beauty Arsenal. In addition, she gives tips on maintaining your hair and fitness routine, and shares why oxygen is so important for hair and skin.

Tell us about the benefits for hair and skin that come from maintaining a regular fitness routine.

Oxygen is one of the greatest nutrients needed in every living cell to create healthy skin and hair. Working out regularly increases your oxygen intake and helps to release damaging acids from the body through sweat. Sweating and urinating are the only 2 ways to release acids from the body, which will help improve your body's PH balance. Stress is one of the leading causes of illness in the body, including those that affect the hair and skin--from hair loss and grey hair to eczema, shingles and acne breakouts. Working out also helps you to de-stress and regulates hormones. Proper hormone distribution is necessary to build strong cells for healthy skin and hair. Ultimately, when you're glowing on the inside with clean organs, then you will glow on the outside with great skin and great hair.

What are two things a woman should do for her skin immediately following an intense workout?

After an intense workout you should always wash your skin with your complete regimen to remove acids, dirt and bacteria, and prevent them from settling on your skin. You should always wash, tone, moisturize and apply sunscreen.

What advice would you give to someone who is afraid to take the first step toward a healthier lifestyle?

Allow yourself to be a beginner; no one starts off being excellent. Everyone has to work hard to achieve their goals. Put in the work, be committed and consistent and you will achieve your goals.

How would you describe a typical day for you? What is your favorite part of what you do?

On top of training celebrity clients I am also the President and face of my company, The Hollywood Trainer LLC. When I am in Los Angeles, I start my day with prayer, meditation, green tea and a workout, and then I train a few clients in the morning. In the afternoon I change hats and turn into the President of my company. I meet with my Director of Operations and make sure we are working towards all of the goals of the company, and I do a lot of problem solving to keep us moving in a forward direction. I love strategic planning. I thoroughly enjoy creating my own blueprint.

Outside of those days, it varies: one day I could be training P!nk, helping her get ready for her world tour; another day I could be working on the choreography for my next workout DVD with Kelly Rowland; the next day I could be doing a Spin class for charity or a workout in the park to inspire people to exercise outdoors; or I could be doing a toe touch in front of the Eiffel Tower while training Alicia Keys on tour. Wherever I am, you can be sure that I have a master plan and I am always working hard with my team to create new and exciting content that will motivate, educate and inspire people around the world to live a healthy life.

A lot of women say they just don’t have the time in their schedule to fit in a fitness routine or they don’t want to sweat out their hair. What advice would you give them?

Everyone has time to workout. If the President and the First Lady of the United States can make time, so can you. You can find a way or you can find an excuse. It's really about prioritizing and time management. If it is important to you then you will make it a priority. Statistics show that people who are healthy are also more productive at work, and of course when you're healthy you are also happier and you feel better about yourself.

Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women in the United States so you need to worry about your heart before you concern yourself with your hair. I love a great hairstyle so I totally understand not wanting to sweat it out, but you just have to wrap it up and learn how to style your hair after a workout. I wear a wrap when I train hard and I dry my hair before I take my wrap off. I also wash my hair once a week. You can still get your weekly press and curl or blow out but you have to learn how to maintain it on your own after your workouts. You can do it!

What would be a good weekly workout routine for our readers incorporating your DVDs?

Cross training is the best way to maximize your results without reaching a plateau, and the best way to work all of the components of fitness. Depending on which The Hollywood Trainer DVD you’ve received in your COCOTIQUE Box, you should alternate it with another method of training. For example, if you received "Sexy Abs with Kelly Rowland" which focuses on the core, then you should go to my website and download "Bikini Bootcamp” or "Cardio Kickboxing”. Both focus on cardio and total body sculpting. You might even try "Power Yoga" which focuses on total body sculpting, flexibility and mediation. You have to consistently challenge the body to get results and you have to work all the components of fitness: cardio, muscular strength, muscular endurance and flexibility! Now that my workouts are downloadable and you can play them on your phone or PC, there are no excuses. You can take them with you everywhere and anywhere! I even do my DVDs when I am traveling so I can just drop my brain at the door and get it in! Sometimes I even say back to the screen, "This girl is nuts!" but when I'm done I'm happy I didn't waste 30 minutes trying to figure out how I was going to get my workout in. Alicia Keys, P!nk and Kelly Rowland all do my workout DVDs while traveling as well! It's just convenient and you know what you’re getting. After all, no one has time to waste!

What role does nutrition play in the fitness routines you advise your clients to follow?

I am also a Holistic Nutritionist and nutrition goes hand-in-hand with training and healthy living. It also goes hand-in-hand with healthy hair and skin. Many people don't realize that you are literally what you eat. Every living cell in your body from your hair, skin, eyes, internal organs, muscles, bones and blood are made from the food that you eat. If you consistently eat junk food then you will have a junk body. This does not mean you will necessarily be overweight--it does mean that you will be malnourished. You can be a size 2 or a size 22 and be malnourished from eating foods with no nutritional value. I give all of my clients my book "The Hollywood Trainer Weight-Loss Plan" (which is also on my website) because it has a very extensive nutrition section with over 80 Healthy Recipes and a 21 Day Meal Plan. I ask everyone I am working with to read through the nutrition section so they understand why they need to eat various nutrients for their brain, hormonal distribution, digestion, elimination, weight-loss, weight-gain, healthy skin, healthy bones, healthy teeth, health heart--and the list goes on. I work with everyone at their level and I can say that all of my clients put their time in when it comes to learning about nutrition. We always share with each other our favorite new snacks, meals and recipes!

We feel fragrance is an important part of feeling beautiful. Do you have a favorite fragrance?

When it comes to training I like to have a clean, crisp air. I love the smell of Eucalyptus oil which I use in my body oil and steam room. I also love the Hugo Naturals Body Butters in all flavors from Mango to Cucumber because they use all natural ingredients, contain no parabens or chemicals and they are amazing for dry skin. I only wear perfume when I am going out in the evening and my two favorite perfumes are "Love In White" by Creed and Bond No. 9 "Nuits de Noho".

If you could have one day completely dedicated to beauty treatments what would they be?

I would start with a Power Yoga class because I believe nothing can bring more nutrients to the face than inversions in Yoga. You get fresh oxygen, blood, nutrients and hormone stimulation, plus you sweat to release toxins. Secondly, I would steam and have an oxygen facial with my favorite facialist Tarin Graham, followed by a massage by my favorite massage therapist, Lisa Rhodes. That's a perfect day of beauty

What’s in your Ultimate Beauty Arsenal – your top 3 beauty products you can’t live without?

There are actually 4 products I cannot live without, and they’re all natural, with no chemicals: Ayur-Medic Anti-Bacterial Wash with Exfoliating Beads, Ayur-Medic Vacha Dry Skin Toner for Dry & Sensitive Skin, La Roche Posay Melt-In 60SPF Sunscreen and La Mer's Creme de La Mer for night time.

And finally, it doesn't matter if I am in New York or Paris, I can guarantee to get a quick 500 calorie burn with the "Cardio Camp" chapter of my “Bikini Bootcamp” DVD. It is in my Ultimate Beauty Arsenal because I need it to feel good and, because I love fashion, so that I can fit into those amazing clothes!
