This is Part 2 of our Inside the Brand feature with Kaleidoscope Hair Products. In Part 1, we covered the scalp habits that protect the length you're growing. This time, founder Jesseca "Judy" Dupart-Harris takes us through the routine itself.

Healthy hair doesn't happen by chance. It happens by environment. We put real thought into what we eat, how we move, and what goes on our face, but the scalp, which is the same skin, tends to get whatever is left over: tight styles, product buildup, and a wash day squeezed in when there's time.
This piece is about the routine that ties those habits together, and why every step in it should be working toward the same goal.
Why the whole routine matters
Kaleidoscope built its following on Miracle Drops, a scalp treatment many people reach for when their edges have been through tight styles and tension. Our August box, the Kaleidoscope Takeover Box, went further, with five products designed to work as one wash-and-style system: the Miracle Drops Shampoo, Conditioner, Styling Foam, Styler Gel, and the Miracle Drops Original.
Miracle Drops is known for its results with thinning edges and tension damage. Why expand it into a full wash-and-style system?
"Spot treatments are powerful, but when your hair is in distress, your entire routine has to pull in the same direction. What good is it to apply growth drops to your scalp if your shampoo is stripping away moisture, or if your styling gel is causing dry flakes and suffocating your pores? Expanding into a full system was about creating a clean, nutrient-dense ecosystem for the hair from start to finish, every single step, from the lather in the shower to the gel you smooth your edges with. Kaleidoscope works to hydrate, strengthen, and protect the scalp so your hair has the best chance to flourish."
The Hub take: This is the most useful idea in the whole conversation, and it applies whatever brand you use. A harsh cleanser, a gel that flakes, or a style that pulls can quietly cancel out whatever good your treatment step is doing. If something isn't working, look at the full routine before blaming one product.
What's happening at the scalp
What is happening at the scalp when people use these products consistently, and how do they support retention?
"Hair growth is directly tied to microcirculation and follicle health. That signature tingling sensation you experience with our Miracle Drops formulas isn't just for show. It is active circulation at work. When blood flow increases to the surface of the scalp, oxygen and vital nutrients reach dormant or weakened follicles.
Tension from tight ponytails, braids, and weaves stresses the follicle, which leads to inflammation and shedding. Our formulations are built to soothe that inflammation, clear away sebum blockages, and fortify the hair shaft so you retain length rather than losing it to breakage. Real retention comes down to regular care: keeping the scalp clean, stimulated, and balanced."
The Hub take: Judy is right that tension is one of the biggest threats to edges, and that retention comes down to regular care. On the tingle: it comes largely from menthol in peppermint oil, which activates the same cooling receptors in your skin that make mint feel cold in your mouth. Peppermint oil has shown promising effects on hair growth in early animal research, but human studies are still limited, so think of the tingle as a sign the product is working on your scalp, not as a measure of growth. The more you feel isn't automatically the better it's working. Burning or itching that lingers means rinse it out.
The ingredients
What are the key ingredients powering these formulas, and why was it important to make a Fragrance-Free Serum?
"We rely on hard-working botanical staples that have proven track records for textured hair:
- Peppermint Oil and Tea Tree Oil deliver antibacterial and clarifying properties, keeping the scalp clean while encouraging healthy blood flow.
- Coconut Milk provides deep hydration and balances that invigoration in our Styling Foam and Styler Gel.
- Aloe Vera Leaf Juice deposits essential fatty acids, locks in moisture, and softens strands without heavy buildup.
Our Fragrance-Free Serum was non-negotiable. Many in our community have delicate skin barriers, react to synthetic perfumes, or deal with conditions like eczema and psoriasis. They deserve all the concentrated benefits of our classic drops without the worry of irritation or flare-ups."
The Hub take: Tea tree oil has some of the better evidence of any botanical in hair care: a shampoo containing 5% tea tree oil improved mild to moderate dandruff in a controlled trial. Both tea tree and peppermint can irritate sensitive skin, though, so patch test any new scalp product on a small area first. And if you live with eczema, psoriasis, or seborrheic dermatitis on your scalp, a fragrance-free formula is a thoughtful choice, but those are medical conditions that often need prescription treatment, so loop in a dermatologist rather than managing a flare on your own.
The five-step Miracle Routine
For anyone using all five products, what's your step-by-step for the best results on wash day?
"Take your time with the ritual. Make it a true self-care moment:
- Cleanse: Work the Miracle Drops Shampoo directly into your scalp with the pads of your fingers. Let the lather lift away dirt, debris, and excess oils without stripping the hair's natural moisture barrier.
- Restore: Follow with the Miracle Drops Conditioner. Focus on your mid-lengths and ends, letting the slip help you detangle gently before rinsing with cool water.
- Target: While the scalp is fresh and slightly damp, part your hair into sections and apply the Miracle Drops Original directly to your edges, crown, or any areas needing extra care. Massage it in for 2 to 3 minutes.
- Define: Dispense 2 to 4 pumps of the Miracle Drops Styling Foam from roots to ends. It gives you a fast-drying, weightless set for twist-outs, roller sets, or wash-and-gos.
- Set and secure: Layer the Miracle Drops Styler Gel over your defined curls or sleek edges for polished, flexible hold that won't flake, dry crunchy, or peel."
The Hub take: Two things make this routine work. First, it treats the scalp and the lengths differently: cleanser and treatment go on the scalp, conditioner goes on the mid-lengths and ends, which is where the moisture is needed. Second, the scalp massage. Gentle, regular massage with the pads of your fingers is pleasant, it spreads product evenly, and a small study found daily scalp massage was linked to thicker hair over 24 weeks. Just keep it gentle, especially along fragile edges.
If you're new to Miracle Drops, Kaleidoscope recommends starting with the Original, or the Coconut formula if your scalp is sensitive, and staying with it for at least 90 days before considering Extra Strength. Hair grows slowly, so give any routine a few months before you judge it.
And as the weather cools, don't let wash day slide. Indoor heat dries out hair and scalp alike, and colder months are when buildup and itch tend to creep in. A steady wash day rhythm, every one to two weeks for most textured hair, keeps your scalp clean and gives you a regular moment to check in on how it looks and feels.
A parting word from Judy
What's one piece of advice you'd leave with the COCOTIQUE community about their hair journeys?
"Give yourself and your crown grace. Hair restoration is not an overnight miracle; it's an act of dedication and care. Learn what your hair responds to, stay committed to your scalp wellness, and never let a setback define your confidence. Your hair can and will thrive when you nourish it with love, patience, and the right products."
When to look beyond your routine
A good routine supports a healthy scalp and helps you keep length by reducing breakage. It can't treat hair loss with a medical cause. If you notice a part that keeps widening, thinning at the crown, patches where the scalp looks smooth and shiny, tenderness or bumps that don't settle, or shedding that hasn't slowed after a few months, see a board-certified dermatologist, ideally one experienced with textured hair. Some types of hair loss are reversible when caught early and permanent once scarring sets in. We go deeper in Why Hair Loss Looks Different for Black Women.
