How did Red Seal get its start?
In this modern health-conscious world, it’s hard to believe that one of New Zealand’s best loved, most iconic health and wellness brands is celebrating 100 years. The story begins in 1923, in a modest store in Auckland, New Zealand, where William T. Anderton opened his natural wellness store. He named it after the protective red seal, which he applied to the packaging on his teas, tinctures and tonics.
Anderton founded the company with a powerful belief, “Given what it needs the human body strives involuntarily to correct ill health.” Radical at the time, Anderton’s idea has endured a century of extraordinary change and 100 years later has never been more relevant.
The brand’s modern day take on Anderton’s founding idea is remarkably simple - “When you put incredible in, you get incredible out”, says Anderton.
What’s the inspiration behind making a natural toothpaste?
We're inspired by New Zealand nature and the incredible nature of all New Zealanders. That’s what gets us out of bed in the morning. We enjoy working on new ideas and products that build on a hundred years of knowledge and naturopathic wisdom, creating incredible products to support the everyday health, and the wellness of all New Zealanders and abroad. Our toothpaste is one of those products and has been for the past 50 years.
What makes your toothpaste different than other brands?
We offer an incredible range of products using unique ingredients, many of which are inspired by New Zealand nature. Like Totarol, a sustainably derived preservative from our native Totara trees’ heartwood. We are also offer several toothpastes with great flavors. Many of our unique offerings include our Lemon toothpaste, a fresh feeling lemon flavor that has NO mint in it, for those taking homeopathic medication or who dislike, or are allergic to mint. Our Propolis toothpaste with 100% NZ propolis extract is derived from plant resins collected by foraging bees and harvested from beehives. Then of course, our Whitening and Baking Soda variants which include stain removing properties, with regular brushing, and are bursting with the freshness that makes your mouth feel great!What are the main ingredients in the Red Seal Whitening Toothpaste?
We use charcoal spheres, coconut oil & baking soda to help remove surface stains and protect from plaque with regular brushing. With no added fluoride, no SLS, no parabens and no artificial colors or flavors.Is there fluoride in your toothpaste?
No, our US toothpaste range is all fluoride free.
