You're exhausted, but you chalk it up to your busy schedule. Your hair is thinning, but you blame it on stress. What if these symptoms point to something your doctor keeps missing?
Thyroid problems affect millions of women but often go undiagnosed, especially in Black women. The symptoms — fatigue, weight changes, mood shifts, hair loss — are easy to dismiss as "just life." But they deserve answers.
THE BASICS
Your Thyroid: Small Gland, Big Impact
Your thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland at the base of your neck that produces hormones controlling your metabolism. Hypothyroidism (underactive) means everything slows down: your energy, your digestion, your ability to regulate temperature. Hyperthyroidism (overactive) means everything speeds up: your heart rate, your metabolism, your anxiety.
THE DISPARITY
Why Thyroid Problems Get Missed in Black Women
|
1 |
Symptoms Overlap With "Life" Fatigue? You're told you're working too hard. Weight gain? Must be your diet. Hair loss? Try a different product. |
|
2 |
Different Reference Ranges May Apply Thyroid levels may vary by race, but most labs use reference ranges based primarily on white populations. |
|
3 |
Implicit Bias in Healthcare Black women's symptoms are more likely to be minimized or attributed to lifestyle factors rather than investigated. |
GET TESTED
Advocating for Yourself
Ask for a complete thyroid panel, not just TSH: Free T4, Free T3, and thyroid antibodies (TPO and TgAb). If your results come back "normal" but you still feel terrible, ask to see your actual numbers — a TSH of 4.0 might be "normal" on paper but suboptimal for you. Consider seeing an endocrinologist if your primary care provider isn't taking your symptoms seriously.

Trust What Your Body Is Telling You If something feels off — if you're not yourself and can't explain why — that's worth investigating. Thyroid problems are common, treatable, and nothing to be ashamed of. You deserve to feel vibrant, energized, and fully alive. Don't let anyone tell you that exhaustion and brain fog are just part of being a busy woman. |
