JLANI Jewels: Lani Nesbit

Eco-Friendly Entrepreneur, Lani Nesbit, Has Created a Jewel of a Company

As you may have seen in our Sneak Peek, the September Bonus COCOTIQUE Box gift is a three-piece jewelry set from the JLANI Jewels Collection. We love it when a brand works to break the mold, and JLANI Jewels has done just that with their eco-friendly stainless steel accessories. We asked CEO & Creative Director of JLANI Jewels, Lani Nesbit, to share why it was so important to create pieces that are earth friendly, to explain some of the challenges of being an entrepreneur, and what 3 pieces of jewelry she thinks every woman would own. Her fabulous jewelry has been seen on many celebrities including Rihanna, Nia Long, Solange Knowles, Angela Simmons and Serena Williams.

You created JLANI Jewels as a way to break the mold of traditional eco-friendly accessories—why was it important for you to create eco-friendly pieces?

It's important to be earth friendly because it helps our environment. Stainless steel is also non-allergenic making it a universal metal that everyone can wear. Our jewelry also has a versatile element that many fashionistas can embrace -- wear with any and everything!

Did you work for other companies right out of school? When did you first know you wanted to be an entrepreneur?

I've always wanted to be an entrepreneur. Growing up, I was very independent and loved doing my own thing. I love the entire process of having an idea and bringing it to life. It's a level of freedom I truly appreciate.

What are some of the most challenging, and the most rewarding aspects of being in business for yourself?

The most challenging aspect of being in business is getting everything done on my own. It's a lot of work for one person to handle but I am maintaining by being as organized as possible. The most rewarding aspect of being in business is being able to do what I love. Designing started off as a hobby for me when I was 13 years old. There is nothing more rewarding than being able to work your craft full time.
How would you describe your signature style, and how does that translate into your jewelry?

My style is very Tomboy Chic. I love sneakers, jeans and tee shirts so being able to accessorize is very important. It pulls my entire look together so I don't look plain. When I design, I design with the idea that no matter what you're wearing, your jewelry should stand out.

What trends in jewelry and fashion are you excited to see come alive for fall?

Winter White is big for Fall/Winter accessories and apparel. However, I try to avoid following all the trends because my approach is to create classic pieces that you can wear years from now. I'm also big on being different and innovative. Trends can be fun but I love being unpredictable.
What trends can we look forward to seeing in the Fall/Winter 2013 JLANI Jewels Collection?

My Fall/Winter collection is all bold cuffs, rings and delicate necklaces. Delicate necklaces are always classic - great to wear alone or layered.

What 3 pieces of jewelry should every woman own?

A pair of large hoops, a bold necklace and a classic pair of studs. All three pieces can really make or break an outfit.

What advice would you give to other women who have vision, but are afraid to make the leap to running their own businesses?

My advice would be to follow your dreams or work for someone else and help build theirs. If you don't ask, the answer is always no. If you don't move forward, you will stay in the same place. The choice is yours. And for me, it was a very simple one to make.
