How Does Your Hair Make You Feel

By GG Renee Hill

Every time my life changes, my hair changes. I don’t plan it that way, it just happens. Somehow it always speaks for me and reflects the experience I am having. Lately I’ve been rocking big, messy hair pretty much every day. No buns, no defined twist-outs or bouncy roller sets--just me and my afro - so happy together. At this time in my life, my afro is giving me everything I need – low maintenance, freestyle, expressive hair that makes me feel creative.

Can I say that? My hair makes me feel creative. Yes, of course I can. Because it does.

When I wake up each day to the big poof on top of my head, I look forward to moisturizing it and letting it stick up and out and every which way. This mirrors my life right now as a creative entrepreneur – a lot of freestyling and a lot of expression. My hair makes me feel unrestricted and I need that energy in abundance now more than ever.

How does your hair make you feel? Have you ever thought about it?

We are drawn to things for a reason. It may take a while for us to figure out why, but it’s worth the process. I’ve always loved big hair and yet, until recently I still suppressed it, afraid to let it be as big as I really wanted. Too distracting, I thought. Too wild. Draws too much attention. Who am I to walk around with my hair making such a bold statement?

I’m a woman who is determined to express who she is and what she loves, no matter what anyone thinks. When I look at my hair, bigger and bolder than ever, I’m reminded that I’ve come a long way and I’m still on the right track. What about you? Are you using what you have to show who you are? Or are you holding back?

Here’s the problem with holding back and why this goes so much deeper than hair.

So many of us are looking for meaning. We want to know why we feel disconnected. We look in the mirror and feel unsatisfied. The things we thought would make us happy don’t make us happy after all. The best way to change this is to become the most fully expressed, authentic version of yourself that you can be. Living this way, you attract people and experiences that fill your life with purpose, purpose and more purpose. More than you can handle. Trust me.

Living a purposeful life is about knowing how you want to feel and filling your life with the things that create those feelings. It can start with something as simple as how you wear your hair.

Why not treat your hair as a source of creativity that allows you to express yourself without saying a word? You can be as bold as you want, as sleek as you want, as bald as you want. Take what’s inside and channel it outward.
